What if Ireland had a chance to help pick the Democrat and Republican nominees for president? Why should New Hampshire and Iowa have all the fun? Ireland has the most savvy and politically sophisticated electorate in the English-speaking world - at least giving Iowa and New Hampshire a run for their money. The average person in Ireland talks about American politics more than the average American. Why shouldn’t Ireland have her say?
Will the result matter? Technically no, naturally. No party nominating convention delegates for Ireland. Then again, Florida and Michigan are happy to sacrifice their delegates for the sake of having more influence in “the momentum primary”. As Slate.com points out at the above link, those two states are voluntarily disenfranchised in terms of formal delegates. So if the disenfranchised can have influence, why shouldn’t that include any disenfranchised electorate whose expression of preference may influence the outcome, even only slightly?
Who knows? In a race this close, the smallest things can be a factor.
Vote early and often.
